Mackmyra is one of the more established whisky distilleries in Sweden and certainly one of the more experimental, yet produces a consistently excellent quality spirit.
This spirit was distilled in the much smaller, old Mackmyra distillery, in 2008 before they built their ultra modern 35 metre high gravity distillery. The cask was matured for the full duration in the Sandvik iron ore mine, 50 metres below ground, then sent to independent bottler – Little Brown Dog Spirits for bottling at the end of 2020.
Nose – Peach melba ice cream, pencil shavings, fresh juniper.
Palate – Salted caramel, pineapple salsa, like a Swedish bourbon.
Finish – Chilli chocolate, the proper fancy stuff.
At 12 years this is classed as quite old for a Mackmyra, and the virgin oak is the first cask of this type to be bottled by an independent bottler.
The label represents the Swedish pine forest and was painted by local artist Jenni Prentice, she’s more talented than we are.
